<description>The North Face x Brain DeadApplying the Design Thinking process and ideation techniques to a marketing campaign to develop a unique digital experience showcasing the collaborations product collection.

BackgroundThis
project was a collaborative product collection between The North Face and the LA based streetwear brand Brain Dead titled An Expedition of the Mind.

This
unlikely paring targets a fashion focused consumer by leveraging fans of
both brands, relying on Brain Dead’s credibility as a streetwear brand and
The North Face’s iconic status in the outdoors.

&#60;img width="2110" height="1046" width_o="2110" height_o="1046" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/53306dca6aa64f0abf5ad2e47c50c4d46b932671e074150e9b6cba4d9c8976ad/Products.jpg" data-mid="83336761" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/53306dca6aa64f0abf5ad2e47c50c4d46b932671e074150e9b6cba4d9c8976ad/Products.jpg" /&#62;
Psychedelic graphics and enhanced color elements bring unexpected detail to classic icons from The North Face.

RoleMy role as the project lead for the digital experience included defining project goals and deliverables, running ideation sessions, leading design direction and managing a team to execute the work.

Process

I chose to utilize the Design Thinking process to first understand and define the problem, then to ideate on concepts in order to produce an uncommon solution that would match the spirit of the collection.

&#60;img width="1980" height="392" width_o="1980" height_o="392" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/304f4b1c340280ef0cf482b95dba9954ae89a6c7c05c757b70832f94d2a709ab/Screen-Shot-2021-10-30-at-11.29.36-AM.png" data-mid="123128650" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/304f4b1c340280ef0cf482b95dba9954ae89a6c7c05c757b70832f94d2a709ab/Screen-Shot-2021-10-30-at-11.29.36-AM.png" /&#62;Design Thinking process

Empathize &#38;amp; Define

I began by
interviewing stakeholders and working with Customer Insights to define our audience. The target was 18-35, lived in an urban environment, well versed in technology with a social interest in the outdoors.

The goal was to create an experience highlighting the collection that brings this consumer to the site, prioritizing impressions, page views and social sharing as metrics.

Ideation
The concept for the
digital experience was born out of multiple ideation sessions run with various
teams across several departments.&#38;nbsp;

Setting a time limit
for each, I led participants through various exercises where we discussed
ideas and dot voted on the best solutions. The following are a
few of the techniques we used.
Worst
idea

Brainwriting

Crazy eightsAs the facilitator I ran these sessions and collected their
output, narrowing the ideas down to a focused concept to achieve
the defined goals of the project.

Prototyping
Once the ideation
was completed the project moved toward a more traditional agile approach of working. Working with another designer we took the concepts from ideation workshop and built out a content map, wireframes and user flows that we could take to the development team for evaluation and create content against.
Due to its technical concept the project required a close partnership
with the development team early on. I oversaw the creation and execution of the creative assets, digital strategy and creation of the experience working with the product team, social team, events
team, merchandising and PR to ensure a coordinated role out of the brand’s most eminent collection of 2019.

Starting with sketches and analog prototypes.

ExperienceConceived as a journey inside the mind of the explorer on a
quest to achieve higher knowledge. Part look-book, part shopping site the
experience utilized story telling and interactivity to engage users and
showcase the collection.

The
final output was an immersive microsite experience comprised of 3 chapters.
Each chapter featured a short video skit of Kyle Ng, Brain Dead’s founder,
and Ashima Shiraishi, brand athlete, highlighting several
products within the collection.

The experience tells a progressive story of two climbers moving
through a fantastical landscape of mountains and art on a journey toward
enlightenment. By presenting this collection in a surreal alpine
environment the campaign nodded to The North Face’s roots in the mountains
while targeting the contemporary, fashion focused consumer.
The journey ends at the top of the mountain, having achieved enlightenment and provides a gateway to the full collection on thenorthface.com.

&#60;img width="1090" height="687" width_o="1090" height_o="687" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/a421d503d5e09bcdf9f10ad37c1713ec07a963752d500de1cf573c1a362f697b/Chapter-3---Mobile.jpg" data-mid="85830913" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/a421d503d5e09bcdf9f10ad37c1713ec07a963752d500de1cf573c1a362f697b/Chapter-3---Mobile.jpg" /&#62;Testing

Remote unmoderated
user testing was conducted using prototypes to refine interactions, navigation
and language. Early feedback uncovered difficulty gauging progress through the
experience and content heavy sections that served as roadblocks to moving forward.
Iterations looked closely at providing clear navigation to users and paired
down copy to support the page.

Digital Campaign

The
collection release was teased out prior to launch through social posts and paid
media. This culminated with a release party at Dover Street Market in Los
Angeles covered by a number of fashion media outlets such as Hypebeast and
Highsnobiety, raising awareness along with a detailed social plan across
all of The North Face’s accounts all of which served to drive to the
experience.

Outcomes
The collaboration and its digital experience generated a 44% increase in weekly social impressions and a 65% increase in site traffic while its success led to a second and third collection released in 2020 and 2021 respectively.

		<description>The North Face Layering Tool
Using customer research to shape outcomes and reframe project deliverables.
Background
Stakeholders requested a step-by-step layering tool with the goal of educating users on the benefits of layering technical gear to encourage the purchase of multiple products together. Rather than creating a tool based on an unverified
assumption, this project focused on reframing the work using business goals, customer research and testing to determine an output.

RoleAs the project lead I was responsible for working with stakeholders to define outcomes and deliverables, conducting research, leading the design direction and managing a team to execute the work.
&#38;nbsp;
Business GoalsThe objective of this project was based on education around layering products in order to increase average order value. Rather than starting with a solution I worked with stakeholders to first align on key results the project intended to address.Feature adoption rateNumber of conversions

ResearchBased on these business goals, we conducted research to understand how users shop for technical products and layering systems. This would give us insight into users mentality while shopping and help determine whether the requested experience was the best solution or if there were additional factors that needed consideration.

Key
customer research findings
When shopping for technical products users want the ability to dig into the details.
Users rely on product filters to narrow down relevant products
Users consider reviews and detailed sizing information in order to make an informed purchasing decision.
Our findings showed that creating a new experience outside of the traditional shopping funnel had potential to disorient users and deprive them of the traditional tools they use to make decisions on technical products.
With this in mind we began working on a solution that would prioritize user shopping behavior.

Prototype

By
focusing on the user experience on Product Landing and Product Detail Pages I led our design team in
drafting prototypes that would both support the research findings and
target our defined metrics.

Initial prototypes explored several design directions

Testing

We
focused on analyzing several prototypes as well as testing similar
functionality found across competitors sites. Findings showed increased
engagement around enhanced filtering functionality within the prototypes while
also improving their comprehension of product categories.

&#60;img width="1090" height="687" width_o="1090" height_o="687" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/0f8a4a90bfdd791e62f2ca3ee3d92d484acc2fa1b51f74b4e66d55580e573d75/PLP---Filters.jpg" data-mid="123604627" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/0f8a4a90bfdd791e62f2ca3ee3d92d484acc2fa1b51f74b4e66d55580e573d75/PLP---Filters.jpg" /&#62;

Designs

Our
test results showed that prototypes of an enhanced filtering tool on the
product landing page both allowed users to shop in a format that they were
accustom to, while providing useful information that would supplement their
understanding of our product categories. Having validated a solution we moved
toward implementing the feature on the site. This involved leading a design and
copy team to finalize designs and developement, and partnering with the merchandising team to
determine where the feature will live and what products to highlight.

Outcomes

Originally
this project was brought to our team as a solution based around recreating a
product seen on other ecommerce sites. Instead we first took a step back to defined key metrics that
would determine success. Then we leveraged customer research to reframe the request
accounting for known customer behaviors and used early testing to a validate concept prior to
implementing on the site.

<description>Benchmark Testing ProcessEstablishing regular benchmark testing as an internal process and a way to track metrics across The North Face’s digital products to deliver continuous value against them.
BackgroundWithin The
North Face work has traditionally been brought to the design team with the idea of creating specific tools. I brought this project to our leadership team with the mission of shifting how the team generates work, moving from a process based on requested outputs, to one that identifies user behaviors and generates work based on shifting or optimizing them.

RoleMy
role involved conducting interviews with stakeholders to determine what products and tasks across the site to focus on. Working with site
testing coordinators and the analytics team to collect measurements and conduct
testing. Partnering with teams to interpret findings and prioritize work.

ProcessI created a process overview that would map the individual phases of the benchmarking program. For the purposes of establishing the practice, most of the effort in this body of work revolved around determining what to measure and how to measure it. Once that was completed measurements were collected to establish a baseline.&#38;nbsp;
&#60;img width="2022" height="476" width_o="2022" height_o="476" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/371d498d6a6347800089cfe4d3856ec1f185899a1f0357f7c7b2e2de425fc073/Screen-Shot-2021-10-27-at-5.59.28-PM.png" data-mid="122895777" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/371d498d6a6347800089cfe4d3856ec1f185899a1f0357f7c7b2e2de425fc073/Screen-Shot-2021-10-27-at-5.59.28-PM.png" /&#62;
Based off NN Group’s&#38;nbsp;benchmarking verticalFuture work in this program will largely happen in steps 3-5 using the findings found here as a baseline to gauge performance and identify areas for product owners and stakeholders to generate work against.

MeasurementsThe goal of this step was to determine what 4-5 actions or objectives we want users to take or complete when they reach the site. I conducted interviews with stakeholders and product owners to answer the following questions, then worked with leadership to prioritize the top tasks.
What user group to
target?
What product(s) to
focus on?Which tasks or features to
measure?
	Product to evaluateLoyalty
BOPISFavoritingProduct filters

	Potential Task
Signing up for loyaltyMake a purchase using BOPIS
Favoriting several itemsMake a purchase using product filters

Using Google’s HEART framework I selected metrics that can be repeatedly collected to track each task.

Outcomes After determining which tasks to track, we collected

measurements. I am using product filters as an example to show tested and tracked metrics for an individual task.

	ProductProduct filters
TaskMake a purchase using product filtering
	MetricTime on taskClick rate
	MethodologyQualitative user testingAnalytics
I worked with the analytics team to understand click rate of the filters and conducted unmoderated user testing to gather qualitative insights. Testing suggested that despite expressed interest in temperature rating as a product characteristic, users

engagement with the filter was low as a result of unclear language. Analytics supported this showing temperature rating as the third most clicked filter(30%) but with a highly skewed click distribution within the sub-categories warm(&#38;gt;9%) and warmer(&#38;gt;9%) warmest(48%).
&#60;img width="1090" height="687" width_o="1090" height_o="687" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/bbd707d994776aee5402f9958686c7bcaf5412ae38c59e4409b2479869198047/PLP---Filters.jpg" data-mid="122970380" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/bbd707d994776aee5402f9958686c7bcaf5412ae38c59e4409b2479869198047/PLP---Filters.jpg" /&#62;This established metrics for the click rate on product filters to serve as a baseline. Along with insights from our usability testing we can now write a user problem statement to create work against with clear metrics to target.

Future IterationsA user problem statement and associated metrics allows stakeholders and product owners a way to create a roadmap for product&#38;nbsp;improvements across the site. Test results and analytics for future iterations of product filters can be looked at in relation to our baseline metrics collected here.

Process Impact

The
North Face collects a lot of data and analytics across it’s digital properties.
Harnessing this information to guide work conducted by design teams and others
to improve the user experience is still being realized. This work will help teams use metrics to identify areas of need, frame problems and track the delivered value of iterations through repeated testing.

		<description>Product Page Redesign
A blue sky approach to elevating the product detail page using customer research findings.

ObjectiveAs The North Face considers ways to enhance its digital product presentation, this project took a blue sky approach to visually rethink the buy box and the image gallery on The North Face’s product detail page. The focus of this work was to optimize the digital experience and enhance the presentation of key consumer categories while relying on customer insights to drive the design process and help better understand and address user goals and behavior.

Process
The work

utilized several usability audits performed on the end-to-end shopping experiences within thenorthface.com as well as qualitative user tests performed on the product detail page specifically.
Based on the results of these, we targeted several pain points as areas of focus to address in redesigning the page.
&#38;nbsp;
Image gallery
Product specifications
Sizing
Image gallery
Users called out product photography as being the most important piece of information on the page and

critical to evaluating a product and making a purchasing decision. The image gallery makes use of large photography to give the page an elevated look and feel and enhance fine details within the imagery.
